How We Built the Android Design System for The New York Times
The New York Times ships multiple Android apps, each with its own visual brand. During this talk, I'll walk through how we built a shared Android design system that powers consistent UI across all of them.
I'll cover these four areas:
Components: The reusable UI building blocks designed to work across different apps. These are custom components such as buttons, dialogs, and toasts.
Design Tokens: The semantic tokens we use for defining color and typography values.
Theming: How apps inherit a common foundation while still overriding just what they need to express their own brand.
Testing: Our strategy for verifying visual consistency across different themes.
