The New York Times ships multiple Android apps, each with its own visual brand. During this talk, I'll walk through how we built a shared Android design system that powers consistent UI across all of them. I'll cover these four areas: Components: The reusable UI building blocks designed to work across different apps. These are custom components such as buttons, dialogs, and toasts. Design Tokens: The semantic tokens we use for defining color and typography values. Theming: How apps inherit a common foundation while still overriding just what they need to express their own brand. Testing: Our strategy for verifying visual consistency across different themes.
