Still Technical: The Return of the Engineering Leader
For many engineers in the late 2010s and early 2020s, becoming an engineering manager felt like the natural next step. You grew as an engineer, started leading projects, mentored people, and eventually moved into management. But after 2025, the career ladder started to look different.
Headcount growth slowed down. Many companies flattened their organizations. At the same time, AI tools made hands-on builders dramatically more productive. A senior technical person who understands product, people, execution, and the tech stack can now operate as a true force multiplier.
In this talk, I’ll share what it looks and feels like to move between engineering management and individual contributor work — and how to turn that transition into a career advantage.
We’ll cover:
1. How small and large companies support IC ↔ EM transitions in 2026
2. How to ramp up fast and add value after being a hands-off manager for 1, 2, 5, or even 10 years
3. Which engineering management skills transfer to managing AI coding agents
4. How to scale success and set career goals after returning to hands-on building
This talk is for engineering managers, tech leads, staff engineers, and senior developers who want to stay relevant, technical, and highly effective in the AI era.
